You can find it in Applications > Utilities using Finder or Spotlight. Go to select and copy the text beneath “Install Homebrew”, which is also available below:Ģ. You’ll also need Homebrew, a Terminal add-on that will allow you to install the latest version of libdvdcss.ġ. This means you’ll have to download libdvdcss separately and reinstall it on your Mac for Handbrake to successfully rip a DVD.īefore anything, you’ll need to download the latest builds of VLC Media Player and Handbrake (both free apps) Be sure to download the build appropriate for your version of OS X. The library used to decode encrypted DVDs is called “libdvdcss.” In a VLC update a few years ago, this specific library was removed from the application. Handbrake, the transcoding application discussed above, uses the VLC Media Player’s “libraries” to read your DVDs files. Here are two methods that enable you to bypass DRM protection and rip encrypted DVDs: DRM helps protect the industry against online piracy, but in the process makes it harder for you to watch your films on mobile devices or archive your collection. This is because many DVDs are now protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management) software, which encrypts the disc and can stop some ripping apps, like Handbrake, from creating a digital copy. If you’ve tried ripping an encrypted DVD using Handbrake or similar app you may have encountered a “no valid source found” error. That’s why it’s always a good idea to make a digital copy that you can store safely on your hard drive. However there are many downsides to owning a physical copy, DVDs get scratched, broken, and depending on the size of your collection can take up a lot of space. In many cases the only option is to purchase a DVD and make a copy for yourself. In Options, you’ll see that the Media Kind is Home Video change this to either Movie, TV Show, or Music Video, according to the type of video.Increasingly films and TV shows are becoming available on streaming services shortly after release, but contrastingly it’s becoming more difficult to obtain digital copies of older films and indie productions. After you do this, find the files in iTunes, select them, and press Command-I to display the Info window. When this is finished, you can add them to your iTunes library. (Read more about subtitles inĬlick Start, and Handbrake rips your selections one or more MP4 video files. Or you might want to rip both the surround and stereo mixes just in case. If you’ve selected an HQ preset for quality, but don’t have a surround sound system, you may want to just rip the stereo track, or mix the surround mix to stereo. In the Audio tab, you can choose an audio track (this could be English, another language, or a commentary) and choose how it’s mixed down. However, you may want to check the Audio and Subtitles tabs of Handbrake after you’ve selected a title and preset. The advantage of these presets is that you don’t need to fiddle much with Handbrake’s many settings. If you’re ripping a lot of discs, I recommend trying the different formats out to see if there’s a visible difference. HQ is much faster than Super HQ, for example. There’s not that much of a difference in size between the Fast and Very Fast presets (they’re both much smaller than the HQ presets), or between HQ and Super HQ, but there is a time difference. If your DVD has surround sound, and you have a surround sound playback system, you definitely want one of the presets that offers this audio. (If you’re ripping a DVD in PAL format, it has 576 lines.) Don’t bother using the HD presets (1080p and 720p), they won’t make your DVDs look any better. If you’re ripping a DVD in NTSC format (sold in the US), then it has 480 lines, so choose one of those presets. You can see the presets drawer at the right of the window. I selected the main title (the movie) from the Title menu and clicked Add to Queue. Check the General section as you can see, there are four groups of presets: Very Fast, Fast, HQ, and Super HQ. This is where you choose the quality of your final file. If you don’t see the drawer at the right of the Handbrake window, click Toggle Presets in the toolbar. If you want to rip any other items, select them, one at a time, and click Add to Queue for each one. The longest one is generally the movie itself select it in the Title menu, then click Add to Queue. Handbrake’s Title menu shows you the durations of each title, but not their names, so you’ll need to check the DVD to find out which is which. If your DVD contains multiple titles, such as a movie and some bonus features, you’ll need to select each one that you want to rip. Launch Handbrake, select the DVD, then wait a few seconds while the app reads the disc.
